Athlete Sweat Sodium Testing in Liberty Township, Ohio

What is an athlete sweat sodium test?

An athlete sweat sodium test measures how much sodium your athlete loses in sweat. The results become fluid and sodium targets for practices, games, and tournament weekends. Sports Nutrition 2Go in Liberty Township, Ohio, between Cincinnati and Dayton, has done more than 1,000 athlete sweat sodium tests.

Is this the same as the sweat chloride test for cystic fibrosis?

No, though the two are related. Both look at salt in sweat, and salt is sodium plus chloride, so the chemistry overlaps. The differences are the method, the purpose and the numbers. The cystic fibrosis test is a medical test: a medication is used to make a small patch of skin sweat while the person sits still, and the lab measures chloride against a diagnostic cutoff. An athlete sweat sodium test collects sweat while your athlete is actually training and measures sodium, because the goal is a hydration plan, not a diagnosis. The two methods do not give interchangeable numbers. A 2026 study in trained athletes found the resting medical method read higher than exercise sweat at low intensity and lower at high intensity. If cystic fibrosis is a concern, that is a conversation with your physician, not with a sports dietitian.

What are the benefits of sweat-sodium testing for athletes?

Athletes lose very different amounts of sodium in sweat. Research from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute reports sweat sodium ranging from about 10 to 90 mmol/L between athletes, and sweating rates from about 0.5 to 2.0 liters per hour. Testing replaces a one-size-fits-all plan, helps with cramping and late-game fatigue, helps prevent drinking more plain water than your athlete sweats, and gives a baseline to re-check when heat or training changes. In one study, college athletes on a hydration plan built from their own sweat and sodium losses jumped about 4.5 inches farther and tracked moving objects faster than on their usual routine.

Why should a high school athlete get a sweat sodium test for hydration?

High school athletes train hard, often in heat, with back-to-back games and tournament weekends. A sweat sodium test shows how much sodium your athlete loses, so the hydration plan matches their body instead of a general guideline.

Who should get an athlete sweat sodium test?

Athletes who cramp, whose energy fades late in games or tournaments, who sweat heavily or leave white salt marks on clothing, who get headaches after drinking plenty of plain water, or who train and compete in the heat. Read the full cramping guide: Full Game, No Cramps

What happens during an athlete sweat sodium test?

A sweat patch is placed on the skin, and your athlete rides an Airdyne bike for up to 20 minutes while the patch collects sweat. Wear workout clothes and bring a sweatshirt and sweatpants, which help your athlete sweat faster.

What does my athlete get after the test?

Their sweat sodium result explained in plain language, fluid targets for practices, games, and hot days, sodium targets with food and drink options that fit, a tournament-weekend hydration plan, and a baseline to re-check later.

Can athlete sweat sodium testing come to our team?

Yes. Sports Nutrition 2Go can test athletes on-site for teams, schools, and clubs, along with MedGem metabolism testing and MuscleSound muscle fuel scans, so every athlete leaves with a hydration plan built for their own sweat losses.

Who does the testing?

Dawn Weatherwax, RD, LD, LAT, ATC, CSCS, a sports dietitian who has done more than 1,000 athlete sweat sodium tests and has specialized in athletes under 18 for more than 20 years.

When do we get results, and what do we do in the meantime?
Exact sweat sodium numbers come back in 7 to 10 days. You do not wait to start. During the visit Dawn asks a detailed set of questions about training, schedule, symptoms, sweat and what your athlete will actually drink, and you leave with a specific plan to begin right away. In Dawn's experience that starting plan alone often changes how an athlete feels within the first week, and the lab number then sharpens it.

What does an athlete sweat sodium test cost?

$300, and the visit takes about an hour. That includes the test, the starting plan you leave with, your athlete's own sodium number when it returns in 7 to 10 days, and fluid and sodium targets for practices, games and tournament weekends. HSA and FLEX accounts are accepted and payment plans are available. Insurance is not accepted, and an itemized receipt is provided for out-of-network submission.

How much should my athlete drink daily?

A common starting point is about half your athlete's body weight in fluid ounces per day, plus 10 to 20 ounces for every hour of activity, spread across the day instead of all at once. That's only a starting point. Sweat losses vary widely between athletes, which is what an athlete sweat sodium test measures. More on daily fluids: How Much Water Should Athletes Drink Before Practice?

How much sodium or electrolytes does my athlete need?

For most athletes, 500 to 1,000 mg of sodium around activity is the working range, with more needed in heat, in long sessions, and for athletes who sweat heavily or leave salt marks on clothing. Across the day, most athletes need 3 to 4 grams of sodium total, spread out rather than taken all at once. A sweat sodium test replaces that range with your athlete's own number.

What are the best electrolyte drinks for young athletes?

Look for a product with more sodium than potassium, and match the amount to your athlete's sweat losses. Options families use include LMNT, Liquid I.V., Nuun, Hoist, ROAR Organic, unsweetened coconut water, and plain water with a pinch of salt and lemon. The right choice depends on how much sodium your athlete actually loses. Product options families use: Swing, Hit, Hydrate

Is Gatorade or BodyArmor enough for my athlete?

It depends on the athlete and the situation. Many popular sports drinks are low in sodium for heavy sweaters, and some drinks marketed as sports drinks have more potassium than sodium. Reading the label matters more than the brand name, and a sweat sodium test tells you what your athlete's drink needs to deliver. Game day fluids and timing: Optimizing Your Energy With Nutrition for Game Day

How do I know if my athlete is a salty sweater?

Common signs are white salt marks or crust on clothing and skin, a salty taste on the face, cramping during or after activity, and craving salty food after practice. Those signs suggest higher sodium losses, and testing shows how much.

Does clear urine mean my athlete is hydrated?

Not necessarily. Clear urine can simply mean the athlete drank a lot of plain water and diluted it, while still being behind on fluid and sodium. Color is one clue, not proof. Body weight before and after activity, thirst, and how the athlete feels late in a session tell you more, and an athlete sweat sodium test tells you what they are actually losing.

How often should my athlete re-test?

Re-check when things change: a new season, a move into heat, a big jump in training, or a growth spurt. Athletes who cramp or race in the heat often re-test each season.

Real athletes who stopped cramping

Micah, football
Micah used to cramp. Now he doesn't. No cramping, he stayed in the game instead of coming out of it, he put on muscle, and he got faster. The fix wasn't more water. It was the sodium that keeps the water in.

Levi, football
Levi stopped cramping after one visit: one sweat test, with sodium built from his own number.

A high school tennis player
"He had no trouble with cramping or hydration both days at districts this week in spite of the heat and humidity. He set the school records for wins in a season." (Parent) He finished 6th at districts.

Isabelle, track
Isabelle went into regionals seeded 4th and finished 1st with a PR in the 1600m, then took 20 seconds off her 3200m. "Finishing healthy, cramp free, consistent energy and fast."

Individual results vary.
