Muscle Fuel Testing (MuscleSound) for Athletes

Fix misfueling before it limits performance

The plate looks full. The muscle may be running low.

USA's #1 Fueling Expert for Athletes Under 18.

A food log is the gas station receipt. It shows what went in, not what is still in the tank. A muscle fuel scan is the dipstick: it checks the fuel stored in your athlete's muscle directly, before the engine starts to sputter.

Takes minutes. No needles. No radiation.

Before you blame the driver

When the car sputters, check the fuel first.

Muscle fuel (glycogen) is the carbohydrate stored in the muscle. It is what hard efforts burn. When it runs low, it looks like this:

- Leaving the driveway on fumes: legs heavy or flat before practice even starts.

- Sputtering late: the second half, the last mile, the third match.

- Each day of a tournament weekend is worse than the one before.

- Lifting consistently, but muscle is not showing up.

- One side still weaker after an injury, and no one can say why.

- The family eats healthy and your athlete still stalls out.

The hardest one to catch: “I’m eating enough. I’m not hungry.” Hunger is a broken fuel gauge. Hard training can blunt appetite, so your athlete can feel fine, believe they are eating enough, and still be running low. They do not know, and neither do you, until someone checks the tank.

One athlete’s real report. Left thigh: under 5, then 25, then full at 100. Right thigh: 75, a gap that shows up as alignment. Results vary by athlete.

Low muscle fuel is one cause. Sleep, illness and training load can look the same from the sideline. Checking the fuel first tells you whether to look anywhere else.

Check the fuel: text “FUEL” to 513-287-9623

If it’s low, you go slow. And you don’t grow.

Low muscle fuel costs speed in today’s game and muscle growth across the season.

What the scan shows. Four readings. Each one changes the plan.

Fuel level

How much fuel is stored in the scanned muscle right now.

What it changes.

When your athlete eats carbohydrate, how much, and whether game day starts with a full tank.

Muscle size

The thickness of the scanned muscle, tracked against your athlete's own earlier scans.

What it changes

Whether training and eating are actually building muscle, or just burning through it.

Left–right balance

Compares the same muscle on both sides. Like a car pulling to one side, one leg can be doing more of the work.

What it changes.

Flags a side that is not storing fuel the same way, often after an injury, to bring to the athletic trainer or PT.

Change over time

Each scan is logged against the last one, the way a service record shows what changed since the last visit.

What it changes

Shows whether fueling changes are working before race times and stat sheets do.

From reading to real change

A number is only useful if it changes what happens next.

Know where the tank stands

Your athlete's fuel level, muscle size and balance, measured instead of assumed.

Know what to change first

One food-first fix matched to your athlete's schedule, sport and season, not a rigid meal plan.

Check the level after the fill-up

A repeat scan shows whether the muscle is holding more fuel, so the plan is proven, not hoped for.

What it pairs with

The scan shows the fuel. These show the rest.

Body composition (Bod Pod)

Is the engine actually getting bigger? The Bod Pod shows whether lean mass is climbing, holding or slipping. The scan shows whether that muscle is being fed.

More on body composition

Metabolism testing

How much fuel it takes just to keep the engine running. Metabolism testing measures it, so every fill-up is sized to your athlete, not to a chart.

More on metabolism testing

Athlete sweat sodium testing

Some engines leak more than others. Athlete sweat sodium testing measures how much salt your athlete loses, so the refill replaces what actually leaked out.

Common Questions About the scan

What is a muscle fuel scan, and how does it help athletes?

A muscle fuel scan uses ultrasound to estimate how much fuel (glycogen, the carbohydrate stored in muscle) is in the muscle right now. It is the dipstick for your athlete's tank. It helps athletes by showing whether the muscle is starting practices and games fueled, so the fueling plan is built on a measurement instead of assumptions, then checked with a repeat scan to see whether it is working. Dawn Weatherwax, RD, LD, LAT, ATC, CSCS, uses MuscleSound® technology for these scans.

Read more: Fueled & Tested: How Smart Nutrition & Cutting-Edge Testing Are Powering Athlete Success

Does MuscleSound testing raise an athlete's glycogen levels?

No. The scan does not change glycogen. Food does. What the scan does is show where the fuel level stands, so the carbohydrate plan around training, recovery and competition is aimed at the right time and amount. A repeat scan then shows whether the muscle is actually holding more fuel.

Does a muscle fuel scan hurt?

No. There are no needles and no radiation. A small handheld ultrasound probe with gel is placed on the muscle. It takes minutes.

What should my athlete wear to a muscle fuel scan?

Athletic shorts or anything that lets the thigh be reached easily. Dawn sends any other prep instructions when you book.

What can each test tell us?

Each test answers a different question. Metabolism testing: how much energy your athlete burns at rest. Body composition (Bod Pod): whether lean mass is going up. Athlete sweat sodium testing: how much fluid and salt your athlete loses. Muscle fuel scan: how much fuel is stored in the muscle right now.

Read more: Services

Can the scan show whether my athlete refuels well after training?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses for it. Scan, change the refuel plan, then scan again. If the muscle is holding more fuel, the plan is working.

Read more: Nutrition Essentials for Young Athletes: Fueling Performance and Recovery

How is it different from a Bod Pod test?

The Bod Pod measures lean mass and fat mass, which shows what changed. The muscle fuel scan looks at how much fuel is stored in the muscle, which helps explain why it changed or did not. Together they show both halves.

How accurate is it?

A muscle fuel scan is an estimate, not a lab test, and it is most meaningful when the same athlete is tracked over time on the same device, the same way you check the same dipstick on the same car. Timing matters too: MuscleSound's own guidance notes that hard exercise shifts water in the muscle, which can affect a reading taken at the wrong time. That is why Dawn uses scans alongside what your athlete eats, how they train and how they feel, never as a single number on its own.

When is it a medical issue instead of a fueling one?

The scan does not diagnose anything. Missed or irregular periods, stalled growth, repeated stress fractures, or weight loss or gain nobody can explain need a physician. Dawn will tell you when what she sees points there.

Is this only for athletes under 18?

No. Most of Dawn's athletes are under 18, and she also works with adult, masters and endurance athletes.

Problems parents see first

Why does my athlete fade in the second half of games?

A late fade is one of the most common signs the muscle started the game with less fuel than the game needed. Hard efforts burn the carbohydrate stored in muscle first. When it runs low, speed, power and decision-making drop even though the effort is still there. A muscle fuel scan shows whether your athlete is starting games low, so the fix goes to the right meal or snack instead of more conditioning.

Read more: Optimizing Your Energy with Nutrition for Game Day

Why does my athlete run out of energy at the end of tournaments?

Day two pays for day one. Muscle fuel can drop 50 to 60 percent in one hard session and stay low for up to 48 hours, and it refills more slowly after stop-and-go sports like soccer, basketball and hockey. A scan shows how much is left in the tank going into the weekend, and a repeat scan shows whether the between-game plan is refilling it. (Bendiksen 2012; Gunnarsson 2013)

Read more: Parents: 4 Nutrition Habits to Boost Energy, Prevent Injuries & Help Your Athlete Win

My athlete does everything right but is not improving. Is it fuel?

It often is, and it is one of the first things worth ruling in or out. In one study, just three days of eating too little was enough for muscle to stop responding to lifting. Sleep, illness and training load can cause the same stall, which is why checking the fuel first matters: it tells you whether to look anywhere else. (Murphy and Koehler 2020)

Read more: From Fuel to Fast: How One Week of Better Eating Broke the Plateau

Why did performance drop when training went up?

More training burns more fuel. If eating does not rise with it, the tank drains faster than it refills, and athletes train harder while getting slower. The IOC describes a reduced response to training in under-fueled athletes. A scan shows whether your athlete's fueling is keeping up with the new load. (IOC 2023)

How do I tell burnout from under-fueling?

From the sideline they look alike. The scan adds one objective piece. If muscle fuel is low, start with fuel. If fuel is where it should be, the answer is more likely rest, sleep, stress or training load, which is a conversation for the coach, athletic trainer or physician.

Read more: 5 Hidden Reasons Athletes Stay Tired (and What You Can Do About It)

Could my athlete be under-fueling without realizing it?

Yes. Many athletes eat to hunger, and hard training can blunt appetite. Teen athletes also tend to underestimate how much carbohydrate they need, by about 73 grams a day in one study. The scan checks the muscle, not the menu. (PMC11722962)

Read more: What Do I Feed My Athlete When There’s No Time To Eat?

Can a muscle fuel scan show why my athlete is not gaining muscle?

It can be. Muscle is built with the energy left over after training. If the tank is being drained just to get through practice, there is nothing left to build with. A muscle fuel scan paired with body composition (Bod Pod) shows both sides: whether the muscle is fed and whether lean mass is actually moving.

Which Fuel Zone is my athlete in?

Take the free Know Your Fuel Zone quiz. It takes 60 seconds. The quiz shows the eating pattern behind the problem. The muscle fuel scan measures what that pattern is leaving in the muscle.

Booking and cost

How often should my athlete be scanned?

The scan is most useful compared with your athlete's own earlier scans. The Season 4-Pack includes four visits, and every visit is a scan plus a consult with Dawn. Use them whenever you want within one year of your first visit.

Does insurance cover a muscle fuel scan?

SN2Go never files insurance claims. Ask Dawn for a superbill and you can submit it to your insurance plan yourself for possible reimbursement. HSA and FLEX are accepted, and payment plans are available.
